Answers to questions around commissions
Below are some frequently asked questions and answers about commissioning a custom watercolour art piece
How long does it take to commission an unique watercolour portrait or art piece?
There is no 'one-size fits all' time to complete a watercolour portrait. It depends on the complexity of the painting. If there are multiple faces in a family portrait for instance, it will take longer. That said, it usually takes less than three weeks to complete the commissioned portrait.
How big is a custom watercolour art piece?
I work in different sizes, with the most popular being 30x40cm, or 40x60cm. This is however just a guide, and I am able to produce smaller or larger works as well.
What is the prices of commissioning a custom watercolour portrait or landscape?
A typical 30 x 40cm watercolour portrait (A3 size), featuring one person or face, would cost in the order of R3 750.00, excluding framing (optional but recommended) and shipping.

There is an added surcharge for paintings featuring more than one person or face, i.e. family portraits.

A 50% deposit is required for the process to kick off.
What kinds of watercolour commissions do you accept at Beezhold Art?
I offer a variety of unique, personalised watercolour commissions.

I have been commissioned for portraits of children, pets, landscapes, families, "portrait" of a house, and even of a dream someone had. I offer heirloom art - transforming family photographs (even faded or imperfect ones) into original watercolour paintings.

Please feel free to contact me to discuss any other watercolour commission ideas.

Commissions are limited in number each month so that each piece receives focused attention.

What materials and techniques does Paula use?
Paula works primarily in watercolour, often on prepared or modified surfaces. She has developed her own paint from iron oxide for distinctive colour and texture. Finished paintings are sealed with cold wax, which allows framing without glass if preferred. Her process draws on layering, scrubbing back, and reworking so that forms emerge sculpturally from the paper. The results are luminous, textured, and durable when properly cared for.
What reference photos work best?
For portraits and Heirloom Art, clear photographs are helpful, but even older, faded, or imperfect images can serve as a starting point. The goal is not exact photographic copying but capturing the essence, emotion, and story. Multiple references, notes about personality, or a short description of the feeling you want are always welcome. Paula’s photography background helps her work sensitively with a wide range of source material.
Can the painting be shipped?
Yes. Paintings have been collected by buyers across South Africa and internationally. Domestic courier and international shipping options are available and quoted according to size and destination. Just as an indication - a 60x40cm framed portrait could be shipped anywhere in South Africa for around R300.

Collection from the studio in Prince Albert can also be arranged by appointment. Confirm current shipping details when you place your order.

Do you have any care and display tips for watercolour art by Beezhold Art?
I suggest keeping the painting away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity. The cold-wax seal offers flexibility for framing with or without glass. Handle with care and enjoy the layered, emergent quality of the surface over time.
