I am a self-taught watercolour artist based in Prince Albert in the beautiful Karoo.
Watercolour was the first, and up until now, only medium I’ve explored. In wonderful, ignorant bliss I dove in headfirst. Although I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of purist traditions, I thrive on the alchemy of experimentation and unorthodox combinations in watercolour.
I have painted on nearly every substrate I can find, often modifying those surfaces with different grounds. More recently I began making my own watercolour paint from iron oxide, a pigment wonderfully rich in both colour and texture. I seal my paintings with cold wax, allowing them to be framed without glass.
My background as a writer and portrait photographer deeply informs my practice. I am drawn to the beauty and vulnerability of humanity. Landscapes too have the ability to carry deep emotions. Across both, a recurring theme always emerges: light breaking through darkness. Pilgrimage. Becoming. A journey marked by imperfection and loneliness, yet always one of hope and rebirth. The medium itself teaches us that light should always be protected.
I work intuitively in layers, mostly from dark to light, constructing and deconstructing in a process that mirrors life. This approach allows the image to gradually reveal itself – a sculptural form that almost mysteriously emerges from the paper. I often scrub paintings and rework the ghost images they leave behind. The resulting works feel familiar and lived-in, reflections of our own acceptance and hard-won peace.
We are not completed works. We are constantly being worked upon - added to, scrubbed back, and reworked - by a greater vision and loving hand. Within this process of becoming lie both the challenge and the joy of living and making art.
My paintings are held in the Prince Albert Art Gallery and in private collections across South Africa and overseas.
I have participated in three Prince Albert Open Studios events, including associated group exhibitions at the Prince Albert Gallery, and was featured in South Magazine (Faces of the Karoo, Winter 2026).
My practice continues to evolve as I experiment with ink, pencils, oil, handmade paints and mixed media while remaining rooted in the luminous, layered mystery of watercolour.
My home studio is open by appointment.
